A Journey of Gratitude: My Gauteng Trip as an Equestrian Photographer

Recently, I set off on a work trip to Gauteng — and as always, it came at just the right time.
There’s something about life on the road that feeds my soul. When it’s just me, the open road, and my music, I find space to reflect, clear my mind, and pull myself back to myself. Every trip seems to happen exactly when I need it most, and this one was no different.

The Adventure Begins in Bloemfontein

My journey as an Equestrian Photographer started this time in Bloemfontein, where I met up with Gino Harmse for coffee and a good catch-up. Then it was on to Revelation Hill Equestrian Centre, owned by my long-time friend Enid Norton.

Enid recently relocated from Pretoria, and I couldn’t believe how much she and her team have accomplished in such a short time. I felt so proud standing there, seeing all they’ve built.

After a restful night, I returned to complete a bit more work — and then, I stepped way out of my comfort zone. Gino convinced me (okay, gently bullied me!) into finally getting profile images done for my business. Like many photographers, I love being behind the camera, not in front of it. But with Gino’s help, plus a wonderful hair and makeup team, it turned out to be such a positive experience. I’m grateful he gave me that nudge — we all need friends who help us grow.

Friesian Magic at Riverview Stables

Next, my work as an Equestrian Photographer took me to Henley on Klip, where I had the chance to photograph Friesians — something that’s been on my bucket list for years.

On arrival, my guesthouse upgraded my room to one of their best suites. I felt like a queen — so humbled and thankful for their kindness.

At Riverview Stables, I started with filming Jagger, a Friesian champion whose presence left me at a loss for words. As I worked, I couldn’t stop the tears — it was a moment I’ll never forget.

Beyond the horses, I met truly incredible people: Sam, the stable manager, who gave up her day off to help in any way she could; Carlien van Staden Schutte, the inspiring owner of Riverview; and Wium van Huyssteen of WVH Equestrian Training — whose passion, kindness, and deep love for horses touched my heart profoundly.

I also had the joy of photographing three more magnificent Friesians, each session as special as the last.

Breathing Deep at Lezar

From Riverview, I headed to the stunning Lezar Wedding & Function Venue in Heidelberg, where I worked with the two amazing sisters on their brand-new website.

Lezar is a place where time stands still for me — a space where I can breathe, reconnect, and simply be. And the sisters? Warm, passionate, and dedicated — the kind of people who fill you up with positive energy.

I even got to catch up with Dale, adding another happy memory to my trip.

First Dressage, First Lessons

Before heading home, I photographed my first-ever dressage show — thanks to the wonderful Tania Allen for the invitation. I was nervous, unsure what to focus on, and I definitely made a few rookie mistakes (like lying down for shots — oops!). But everyone was kind and supportive, and I left laughing at myself and grateful for the learning experience.

The Road Home

My trip ended with a beautiful drive back to the Karoo, my heart full of gratitude for the incredible people I met and the opportunities I had as an Equestrian Photographer.

💫 Every journey reminds me how blessed I am — and how much more there is to learn, see, and share.

I’ll be back in Gauteng this September, and I can’t wait to see what magic the next trip brings.
