How Much Does Professional Horse Photography Cost in South Africa?
Professional horse photography in South Africa can vary considerably depending on the photographer’s experience, location, session length, number of finished images and amount of editing required.
At Adri Krige Photography, my 2026 horse photography prices start at R1,500, with three equine photography packages ranging from R1,500 to R2,500. Travel, accommodation and meals are charged separately when required.
Here is a quick overview:
| Package | Price | Session length | Final images |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | R1,500 | 20–35 minutes | 10 |
| Classic | R2,500 | 45–60 minutes | 20 |
| Gold | R2,000 | 20–40 minutes | 10 |
The time spent taking the photographs is only one part of the service. Professional horse photography also includes experience, specialised equipment, travelling, careful image selection and many hours of detailed editing after the session.
Horse Photography Prices and Packages
I created three different horse photography packages because I believe there should be an option for different budgets and desired results.
Not every client needs the same number or style of photographs. Some people want a small and meaningful collection, while others want more variety or a dramatic fine-art experience.
The price may differ between packages, but the patience, care and individual attention I give to every horse and person remain the same.
Mini Horse Photography Package — R1,500
The Mini Package is an affordable introduction to professional equine photography.
It includes:
-
One location
-
One horse
-
One outfit
-
One rider or owner
-
A natural setting
-
A 20–35-minute photography session
-
10 professionally edited, high-resolution images
-
Low-resolution digital copies for social media
The low-resolution photographs are delivered via WhatsApp for convenient social media sharing. The high-resolution photographs are supplied through Google Drive and are suitable for printing.
This package is ideal for a first professional horse photoshoot, a special gift or anyone wanting a small but meaningful collection with their horse.
Classic Horse Photography Package — R2,500
The Classic Package provides more time, more photographs and greater variety.
It includes:
-
One location
-
One horse
-
Two outfits
-
One rider or owner
-
A natural setting
-
A 45–60-minute photography session
-
20 professionally edited, high-resolution images
-
Low-resolution digital copies for social media
This package is best suited to someone who wants a fuller visual story of the relationship they share with their horse.
The additional time and second outfit allow us to create more variety without rushing the horse or rider.
Gold Fine-Art Horse Photography Package — R2,000
The Gold Package is designed for clients wanting a more artistic, fine-art result.
It includes:
-
One location
-
One horse
-
One outfit
-
One rider or owner
-
A black backdrop
-
A 20–40-minute photography session
-
10 professionally edited, high-resolution images
-
Low-resolution digital copies for social media
The black background removes distractions and places the complete focus on the horse and its person.
The finished photographs are timeless, dramatic and ideal for printing as statement pieces for your home.
Why Does a 35-Minute Horse Photoshoot Cost R1,500?
A common misunderstanding about professional horse photography prices is that the client is paying only for the minutes spent in front of the camera.
The photography session itself is only one part of the work.
After every session, I review all the photographs, select the strongest images and edit each chosen photograph individually.
If I spend approximately 20 minutes editing each of the 10 photographs included in the Mini Package, the session and editing alone already represent almost four hours of work.
At a package price of R1,500, this works out to approximately R383 per hour before considering:
-
Travelling time
-
Planning and client communication
-
Image selection
-
File management and backups
-
Professional editing software
-
Gallery preparation
-
Equipment maintenance
-
General business expenses
I also work with professional photography equipment valued at approximately R150,000. This equipment helps me produce detailed, high-resolution photographs that can be printed and displayed, rather than only viewed on a phone.
You are therefore not simply paying for a 20–35-minute photoshoot. You are investing in the experience, professional equipment and detailed work required to turn a brief moment with your horse into photographs that can be treasured for many years.
Why Hire a Professional Equine Photographer?
A professional equine photographer brings far more than an expensive camera.
Horses require patience and an understanding of their behaviour, movement and expressions. An equine photographer must recognise the brief moment when the horse’s ears, eyes, expression and body position come together naturally.
A professional horse photographer also understands:
-
How light falls on both horse and rider
-
Which angles flatter the horse
-
How to work calmly and safely around horses
-
When to give direction and when to wait
-
How to photograph the horse without creating unnecessary pressure
-
How to produce high-resolution images suitable for printing
-
How to edit an entire collection consistently
A friend with a good camera may capture a pleasant photograph. A professional equine photographer intentionally creates a collection that reflects the beauty of the horse and the relationship it shares with its person.
A Calm and Intuitive Approach to Photographing Horses
Horses are deeply sensitive animals. They respond to our energy, body language and the atmosphere we create around them.
Some horses do not need to be controlled or rushed. They simply need time to observe their surroundings, settle and feel safe.
I approach every horse photography session with patience, understanding and a calm demeanour. When the horse begins to relax, the owner or rider usually starts to relax too.
That is often when the most honest photographs happen—not through force, but through trust and connection.
For me, professional horse photography is not only about creating a beautiful image. It is about honouring the quiet relationship between a person and their horse.
Capturing the Moments Between the Poses
Being in front of a camera can feel daunting. Many people believe they need to pose or perform perfectly, but the most meaningful photographs are often found in the little moments when both horse and human let their guard down.
Sometimes those moments happen when I lower my camera and the pressure to perform disappears.
My role is not simply to direct poses. It is to create a calm, unhurried space where the horse and its person feel safe enough to be vulnerable and fully present with one another.
When they stop trying to create the perfect photograph and allow the moment to unfold naturally, I begin to see the gentle touches, quiet glances and honest expressions that tell their story.
Those are the moments I want to preserve.
Are Travel Costs Included in the Package Price?
Travel, accommodation and meals are quoted separately because I travel to photograph horses in different parts of South Africa.
My current travel-related fees are:
-
Transport: R6.50 per kilometre
-
Accommodation: R750 per night
-
Meals: R300 per day
When several clients arrange photoshoots in the same area, the applicable travel, accommodation and meal expenses are divided between them.
This can make booking a travelling professional horse photographer considerably more affordable for each client.
Horse owners, riders and yards are welcome to coordinate group bookings and share the cost of bringing me to their area.
How Long Does Horse Photography Editing Take?
My normal editing lead time is up to 60 days.
I continue photographing clients and travelling while editing completed sessions in booking order. The photoshoots do not stop while I edit, and time spent travelling naturally reduces the number of uninterrupted hours available for editing.
However, I do not want to rush through a client’s photographs simply to deliver them faster.
Every collection receives individual attention. I carefully choose the strongest photographs and refine the lighting, colour, composition and details so that the finished gallery feels polished and consistent.
The 60-day turnaround allows me to give every client’s photographs the care they deserve while continuing to serve clients in different parts of South Africa.
Rushed editing is available at R350 per image when selected photographs are required sooner.
Can I Purchase Additional Photographs?
Yes. Additional professionally edited photographs can be purchased for R100 per image.
This gives clients the option to expand their collection when there are more beautiful images from the session that they would like to keep.
What Is Advanced Photo Editing?
Advanced editing is available from R350 and is separate from the standard editing included in each package.
Advanced editing may include:
-
Background removal
-
Background replacement
-
Removing visible fences
-
Removing bridles or halters
-
Correcting the position of a horse’s ears
These changes involve more detailed editing and are quoted separately according to what the individual photograph requires.
Which Horse Photography Package Should I Choose?
Choose the Mini Package if you would like an affordable introduction to professional horse photography and a concise collection of meaningful images.
Choose the Classic Package if you want more time, two outfits, greater variety and a fuller story of the connection you share with your horse.
Choose the Gold Package if you are drawn to timeless, dramatic fine-art portraits created against a black background.
If you are unsure which option will suit you best, I can help you choose according to the type of photographs you love, your budget and what you would like to remember about this time with your horse.
Is Professional Horse Photography Worth the Investment?
Professional horse photography is not created only for today.
Years from now, these photographs become more than beautiful images. They become a reminder of the connection, love and trust shared between a person and their horse.
They preserve a season of life that cannot be repeated—a time filled with companionship, vulnerability and joy.
When your horse is no longer physically beside you, the photographs allow that bond to remain visible. They become part of your story and a reminder of a beautiful time of love and life.
That is the true value of professional horse photography.
